I think the "normal" Smiley's are good on a forum ..
The only one what must work .. if anyone postet smileys from his mobile device like this: :hugging:
Many are stubborn in relation to the path, a few in relation to the target.

I think that is about time...

I have two doubts though:
1. should we use the parsed (i.e. bbcode-like) emoji or go for the UTF8?
2. how to present the picker? Especially on mobile. I mean, the editor is already pretty crowded, maybe a toggle button that alternates the formatting bar with the emoji one?

1. UTF8 could be a solution
2. I know you don't like to copy other forums, but this could be a solution

It's not that I don't like to copy, I don't like coping just for the sake of it, if there is a reason for using the same solution, good. Otherwise... well, there may be something better. :P

What does it look on mobile devices?

Just for a test, I remember there was a poop smiley, so I searched for that, but I see they converted everything into emoticons. Anyway you can use both, smiley and emoticons from the same place.
