Title: Update the front page
Post by: IchBin on March 19, 2015, 12:39:25 pm
After browsing here for a moment, I've noticed things that I had no idea that you guys have done. Mostly, because I haven't been able to spend any good amount of time here reading all the posts...

I'd suggest you guys update the front page. Include more links to the tools you've created. I saw that you guys now have a tools.elkarte.net site. Maybe link to the different important tools. Maybe links to the mods and themes sites too now. You have quite a bit of stuff I think should be available. Right now, it seems like everything is getting lost in this forum.

And now I see I missed the themes/addons links. But that would mean they need to be more visible. lol Move them up. And maybe even put them in the right column.

There are under the Home button. I agree that are not that visible ;)

Yep, anyway, the sub-menus are not very evident unless you know what to click or mouse-over.

@IchBin what would you suggest? :P
Maybe few new buttons under the download/fork? Something like extend/design/tools/languages?

Imo it's the best position for the new buttons, otherwise could add it into "Even more features?" box, but it's not so visible

Tried to give it a bit of a facelift ... added buttons, converted to bootstrap, fixed the links, etc.

Nice! :D
The text color of the buttons looks a bit weak and difficult to read, but for the rest is pretty nice on both Light and BeSocial!

Good point, I tweaked it a bit just now ... there are some "fights" between our css and bootstrap, but nothing to bad.  Have to reset a few elements here and there.

Probably improvable, but better indeed! :)

Excellent, I was shooting for "needs improvement" or "just OK"  :P :P

I committed the changes to the repo so if anyone wants to take a run in the thunder dome, the files are there  :D

They should be below that ...  should be ..  That entire right side column should flow below left side column on narrow screens.

I have this problem with the icons too. Everything else looks great! Well done!  :)

Ah got it !! ... Yes thats bootstrap css overwriting ElkArte behaviors.  Bootstrap does some global "resets" to help resolve all the browser inconsistencies, I'll get that adjusted shortly.

Should be fixed now, it was caused by bootstrap applying border-box to all :before and :after pseudo elements.

Love it Spuds! Sorry, I'm not the frequent visitor I once was... But to come back on this lol, that looks awesome. Maybe even put the importer link in that right side too. Well done! I forget it was in git, so I'll try to remember to propose something instead of just complaining next time. :D

I am trying to put some ideas on home page. Will post a teaser soon..

I don't know but to me, the "download elkarte, themes, adding, and fork" buttons look a bit awkward on the homepage on a desktop. They look a bit too big, plus they look nice but like idk they kinda ruin the look of the homepage a bit. :P

Maybe reduce the size or something :P
Title: Re: Update the front page
Post by: IchBin on April 23, 2015, 12:59:48 pm
I think they look good personally. They bring attention to the important parts and make it easy to know where those things are located. Reducing the size could probably be done and still have the same effect though.

It would be unwise to give an effect on home page. People are warned of flashing ads that they might view the product with suspicious eyes.

I don't think anyone was suggesting to have anything flashing. Discussion was based on making the buttons smaller to have a desired outcome. Not to create any special effects.

Yup, this.

Maybe change the green color to something else cuz it doesn't really fit with the rest of the theme lool. By green, I mean that green button. Or maybe it's just me to whom it doesn't seem right to. :P

I mistook effect to CSS effect. Happens when we stay late :P

I also noticed something that needs fixing...

QuoteInitially based on the well known Simple Machines Forum (SMF), it began with an overall of the code in order to modernise, implement new features and make a forum software be relevant in a time of unprecedented social interaction. It has grown to become a modern and feature rich forum package to meet the demands of today's discussion groups.

1. overall should be overhaul
2. modernise should be modernize

For the description for the announcements board....it says " Or is something "important" happened? "....shouldn't it be something like "Or did something "important" happened?" and not is?

I know my English isn't very fluent...but that doesn't seem like it's correct. :P

Would be better to use if not is... Also, that board, should be this board...

Want to know when a new version is released? Or if something "important" happened? Feel free to enable email notifications on this board. ;)

Oh true, "if" makes more sense to use. :p

Emanuele, I can log onto your admin account and do it for you, if you want.  (http://www.smiley-faces.org/smiley-faces/smiley-face-halo.gif)

The Transifex link here on the home page isn't working:

QuoteThis is a list of the awesome language translators who have contributed to ElkArte on Transifex, making it possible for people around the world to use ElkArte in their native langauges.

- change the download link to 1.0.4
- added a button to translations
- changed the transifex link to another (the one that was there you needed to be logged in to work, not sure the new one is better or not)
