Title: Silk - A smooth theme for ElkArte
Post by: Wizard on October 09, 2015, 07:16:12 pm
With a lot of helpful suggestions from the community Team AF was able to finish an open source ( MIT license ) theme for ElkArte. We have decided to name it Silk. My special thanks to timely help by @radu81 , @emanuele and styling guide by @TE . Please find the theme attached. Suggestions and feedback are welcome :)

Can I trouble @emanuele or @Spuds to add this theme to Theme Site ?

Congrats on the theme !

I'll mark this as unread so I remember to add it to the site ... all you have to do is commit a single file to the themes git-page repo so really anyone can do it.

Congrats!
Very nice one! :D
It's simple and clean, I like it. nods

Looking at the package I just have a question/suggestion: did you really change all the php files? If not, you may just redistribute those that you modified. ;)

Doesn't FA have some icons for the stats and online members icons? They look out of place with your other icons. I know it has an RSS icon.

Yes. I need to get familiar with ElkArte theme details before I can replace. Those replacements will come only in future versions of Silk.

Six version changes a day?  :o

Maybe you should try to get the theme in a stable, most final status before publishing it.

Post by: Wizard on October 12, 2015, 04:43:39 am
It is stable. I was simply modifying. This one is the most stable. I have done as much as I can. :)

PS : The updates are smooth. Simply install the new version as another theme

It's your thing and I appreciate your work. But I for myself will not install a theme which I have to update this often.  ;)

The theme is stable as of 1.0. You need not try new version if you do not wish to have new modification and is happy from what you have now. I would suggest 1.5.5 if you go for the theme ( only if ) now. I may add new features like colour picker which can give you multiple colour variants with a single theme. You can skip it and stay with the single colour mode if you do not wish to update. If you are updating, it is as simple as installing a new theme ( you can keep the old one intact ) and make use of new features.

You don't need a version change every 10 minutes. Nobody is using your theme and nobody is updating every 20 seconds. TBH, nobody really cares that you made changes. They will install a theme that looks good and works. If either one doesn't come to fruition when they install it, they'll uninstall it. End of story.

"IF you build it, they will come"

Users come after you build something awesome. Stop worrying about everyone else and start worrying about making something awesome.

there is still some green colour there

The breadcrumbs are not so intuitive, with 1.0.5 release there were some impovements:

Links in postings are also green. Or is this intentional?

Little suggestion: the white text on the light blue of the top menu could be somehow difficult to read. A little more contrast would help I think. ;)

Free, open source = Easy to customize ;)

Quote from: Wizard – I don't know what you guys are talking about.

When you open a topic with links inside the posts you will see that the link is underlined and dark green (like in the default theme). Is this a mistake, should the link be blue (all in the theme is blue except links in postings and the bars at the statistic page)?

Quote from: Wizard – Free, open source = Easy to customize ;)

@emanuele Maybe it would help making the text bold?

Oh, that's a great attitude, @Wizard . If someone would say to me: "Hey, the theme you are working on, some of the texts seem to be hard to read because of the colors you are using" I would examine this problem and try to fix it. Or say: "Thanks, but I like it so and I think it is easy to read".

The thing you say to us (or at least to me it sounds so) is: "Oh, you think there's something not okay with my theme? Well, it's open source, so go along and fix it yourself!"

We had discussions like this before, you and me. I think (and I live this attitude) when you offer a plugin or a theme you should be open for suggestions and you should maintain the things you offer. It is different when a user wants to change the colors in general for example, then you can say: "You can, simply change the CSS file." That would be okay, 'cause you can't fulfill everybody's wishes. But for me it sounds different here. I will not lecture you, still not, but maybe you should overthink this answer you gave emanuele. It sounds kind of unfriendly to me and maybe to all using your theme, sorry.  :-X

If any team member thinks my posting is inappropriate, feel free to delete it.

@Jorin, since I agree with you. His assertion that others were copying his Theme (http://www.elkarte.net/community/index.php?topic=3059.msg21370#msg21370) bothers me as well.

I don't want to acuse anyone of anything and I don't want any bad feelings between us all, @wintstar . That includes @Wizard ! I know what you mean but let's not discuss such things open to the public. Thanks!  :)

Well, that's not necessarily true, better say: free, open source = anyone can customize.
It's full of open source projects not that easy to customize. :P (And to say the truth a good part of Elk is still somehow tricky to change.)
