Title: Working on new home page
Post by: meetdilip on July 13, 2015, 03:13:24 pm
I thought will try to give something to the community that is visible :D . I have almost completed my variant of Home Page. I have posted the screen shot here (http://adminforum.in/index.php?thread/939-working-on-elkarte-page/). Will try to take it live sometime tomorrow. Suggestions are welcome.

Nice try! :D

I would set less space between the blocks, now they look rather isolated.

I can. But that will compromise responsiveness to some level.

It looks very disjointed. Like there is no commonality between everything.

You can let them resize depending on the width (use % width instead of fixed).
Is that a mockup or an html page?

Possible. I was trying to reinvent the page. Believe it or not, I spent months before finalising the best way to present ElkArte who thinks all free and community powered are worthless effort. I am happy that it is simply layout you are troubled with. That can be easily handled ( I hope ). :)

I tried to beautify, and this is how it looks now ( better results if you download the image and view it on 1:1 scale)

Looks better. I don't like the header. The boxes look much better though.

The copy (the words) need some work, but the styling looks good.

I would like to see some images. A view of what an actual forum looks like. Out of the forums' homepages, I think IPS (https://www.invisionpower.com/) has the best.

That is why I used the term " Beautify ". I simply tried to change the way people see ElkArte. It is a much bigger boon than they can imagine (or they know). I  / we can add images, change colours and all those touch ups at  a later point. As you can see, the version I posted above is the same as my first attempt image. Certain elements were tweaked to give better appearance ( just it is not as simple as we put in words ). As for images, I tend not to use it. Page loading will be much faster this way.  We can always give a demo if required.

QuoteThe copy (the words) need some work,

These are the best words I can use to describe ElkArte :)

Your background should never be brighter than the foreground.

^^ That reminds me of the 60s and a trip! :P
Interesting concept, but probably that background should be limited to the header or a limited space. ;)

Always open to suggestions :)

That's the reason I posted the alternative.

Check the adminforum thread on ElkArte's new home page design. There is a surprise in waiting. ;)

Nice layout  :D

I think we still need to work on the wording in the boxes but thats easy enough, I do like the lead in text of the boxes and the icons.

Love the commit widget that you found on git, thats much nicer than the current text box.

We may want to consider two things.  One is that none of the text really says what ElkArte is, the closest is the Mobile box but nothing says its a forum / community software?  The second is when you go on mobile, which box do we want to show first, right now its the Mobile one, and again it does not lead off with "about us" or "what it is"

Just my thoughts.

What's the community decision on the new home page ?

I'm pretty sure there was a live version and not only the image, but I can't find the url... or am I dreaming? :-[
There are a couple of misalignments and I agree with Spuds the text needs some work, oh, and while we are talking, just to stay on the safe side, where does the image of the header come from? I would avoid using material without permission. ;) Just asking, not implying anything, but I think it's worth asking. :)

Here is the live page :)

http://adminforum.in/elkarte/

The header image, I remember was available for both commercial and personal use under creative common license. But since almost a month has passed I cannot confirm it is so. I will be happy if someone can suggest an image or we can use linear gradient instead.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Looks pretty bad on mobile. Galaxy S5 chrome

Your grid looks a little messed up. Your logo is not aligned with the content. On mobile devices it would be good if the grid had around 100% as you're wasting space on both sides :)

I'm not really feeling the design. The massive amounts of verbiage makes it look strewn and unorganized. The icons look more like decorations than representations. The language needs a proofing pass and some massive rewrites in places (the whole justification for free is undeserving of Elk, comparing this project to another just waters down the substance of this one). And the layout suffers from misalignment issues.
