Title: ElkArte 2.0 ?
Post by: forumovod on August 12, 2020, 05:42:43 pm
Hi!
I used SMF 2.0 for a long time and waited for the release of SMF 2.1 to be installed on the forum. But the SMF 2.1 version of RC stopped in development.
So I have a question: will there be a version of ElkArte 2.0? Or should I look for another script to upgrade my forum.

Is it? I thought 2.1 beta is already released?

Yes. At least @emanuele said there will be version 2.0. From there ElkArte will fully depart from SMF, I think.

You can look for any other script / software, if that is what you want. No one really bothers about it.

This interests me. So I posted my question here and not on another forum.

If ElkArte stopped developing in the same way as SMF stopped, then I have no interest in migrating from SMF to ElkArte.

May be or may be not. Keep assuming so we can also opt to stop responding to you too.

You could always take a peek at the elkarte github to see if there is recent development.

Thanks for your reply))
Now I understand why the activity of users here died two years ago.

Just keep assuming, assuming, assuming... That's what you do best I guess. :P

If you don't have someone to talk to, find another user. I don't have time to chat with you.

hmm... that doesn't really mean anything (sorry I don't intend to offend, it's just at the moment I come from a very heavy day and I'm pretty tired and can't find the proper wording... :D ).
Elk is basically incompatible with SMF since 1.0.
Code-wise, parts of Elk are still very similar to SMF (mostly some backend code in some specific page of the admin panel). They may still share some bugs with some common cause.
Quite a bit of code, though, it's already quite different and with quite a bit of different choices.
But Elk has always departed from SMF since the first commit. True that during the first period, the two projects have shared patches.

So, I don't understand.  :)
Will ElkArte be developed after version 1.1?

ElkArte as an open source product will depend on the availability of any capable and willing developer(s) of course, as such, nobody can be sure.

So the next version is not being developed? Stop at 1.1.6 ?

Nope. So far after this is 2.0 according to @emanuele. Well, I think he mentioned that somewhere before. May be a bit of 1.1.7 or 1.1.8 before it. 2.0 will be directly tested on this site according to him, soon. But soon is not defined yet. :(

Well. The main thing is that the project should develop and not be stopped.

https://semver.org/

Micro versions are generally supported for security fixes for at least a few months (that could be a year, for example) after the release of the next minor/major version.
So, you can expect 1.1.x to be supported for a while after 2.0 has been released.
Considering I'd like to have the 1st beta of 2.0 out by the end of the year, that would mean something like at least until 2022 I'd say.

Yes, I wanted to know about it. Because I didn't find a topic about the state of development 2.0 here.

That's said but to note 1.0 is out of support quite early I'd say, so the best is to follow major upgrade to 2.0 once its stable version is released. Wait!? Do we have stable version here? :P. Yes, we do. ;)

Stable is an overrated word. :P

Then you need a staple (and a battery). Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In SMF there is a thread about the nightly build.
https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=558451.0
Maybe someone here will also open such a topic about ElkArte 2.0?
Title: Re: ElkArte 2.0 ?

Not really necessary.
SMF needs some moving around of files to create an install/upgrade package, for Elk, the install package is exactly the same as the file you can download from the repository, where it says "download zip":

so, if you want a "nightly", just pick the file and be happy with it.
Anyway, TBH, if someone wants to try a development version and doesn't know how to create it, he is better not using a development version. Really. And I'm not ruling out help, I'm just saying if you want to try development you have to be ready to do some development.

Edit by Spuds to fix img tag []'s, @emanuele does not now how to use the editor :P

<insert expletive rant about developers not giving people 'easy builds' for unstable versions, only for people who have no business running development builds slowing developers down with their support needs>

How dare you, you monster, how dare you not enable people so that you can actually work on Elk 2.0 faster? MONSTER.

(In case the sarcasm wasn't noticed, I'm not calling anyone a monster. I am poking fun at the type of entitled people who think everything just should be done for their benefit, and without any understanding of what is involved)
