Title: Changing the default color sheme?
Post by: TE on January 29, 2013, 01:22:48 am
Elk != SMF, thus it might be better to change this blue/orange thingy to something else? ;D

I propose that we get a blind monkey and a colour picker, and use the first three colours said monkey picks. This will be the only way to avoid endless arguments over the precise shade of puce that should be utilised, and why lime green is an abomination blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.....................

I've used this site to help me get palettes that I like and have colors that work together .... did a search on SMF for fun and there were a couple of DzinerStudio ones came up.  Nothing for Elkarte though :P

Interesting. Usually I avoid those sites and just wing it myself, but it may be a handy record of what is likely to have broad appeal.

Just looking over this page: http://www.colourlovers.com/palettes/most-loved/all-time/meta

Some of them are horrible IMO. However, something like this would be a good candidate for a default: http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/292482/Terra

It's not going to freak anyone out, and it's both stylish and has a bit of grunt to it.

I don't mind that one. Don't mind these either.

Those all look good to me  :) I think they all had a warmer palette than the cool blue one we have now

I guess we (meaning Ant :D) would need to apply them to the css to see how they work .. you know which colors are used where and does that end up with a site thats easy on the eyes

Personally I'd love to see a forum go with a warm green colour scheme out of the box, but that's just me.

Interesting, I'm reminded of the old phrase 'blue and green should never been seen'. The green's not that far off what I'd like to see, but it does not go with the blue.

If you believe that phrase, don't ever look at scenes like this.

I didn't say I believed it, I said I was reminded of it ;) There are times when the two do not go together very well.

The problem isn't the colors, but the saturation. You got a strong blue against a weak green/grey. It would be better to lighten the blue or darken the green. Backgrounds tend to be very sensitive to much saturation though, taking the limelight, so a light grey with just a hint of green might work. But you can also use gradients or even a lightsource-type background to make it look better.

Colorsets are ok enough - but only useful if you are confident at putting matching colors together yourself in the first place. A person untrained in that can make a disaster of the best matched colorset in the world.

Also looks a bit like a howling basset hound (nose at top right, ear flying out to the left). Could make an awesome Rorschach test.

Please, have at it. I committed it already, for the site to have it too. It's up to your vision of ElkArte :)

She didn't actually say that. What she said was "Let them eat brioche".

One problem with these palettes is that they come with licensing restrictions. So although they can give a good indication of usable combinations, I don't think we should rely exactly on any of them.

ETA: Was just playing with some of them. Meh. I'm gonna sort all the structural shiz first. Worry about colours last. :P

Whatever you folks choose, I'd love it if we cans experriment with *no blue*, or, rather, no light blue. Reason is, is probably a very good choice, but everybody doez it :P

I agree, but please lets consider this a non-issue ("pin it down somewhere and forget it for the moment"), and play freely with anything. If you find the best combo on earth, and need anything (i.e. permission), please let me know, and open it for discussion on the specific case.

Yeah agree. I was basically saying that we should not get stuck on one that is "ZOMFG the best combo ever!". There will always be umpteen combos that will work, so I'm all in favour of messing around.

Would be happy to skip pale blue too. Totally dropped it in my guinea pig theme, and nobody misses it.
