I think that the problem may not be in the absence of mods, but in their subsequent support. Now many mods that were transferred here from the SMF have not been updated for a long time.
With each new version of the ElkArte engine, the risk of incompatibility of old mods increases.

I think most addons are not updated if there is no reason to do so.
Permission addon like the link permission may easily be created but I am not sure whether there is a good need for that. I may look into it later in my free time.
