what is this app doing compared to a responsive design? Notifications maybe?

I am trying to add push notifications in later versions. In fact, learning to make apps. :)
There are actually advantages and disadvantages for apps.
Advantages off the top of my head:
1) apps just need to get a JSON request (instead of the whole html, javascript, css, etc., etc.), so less data traffic for both the server and the user,
2) apps can have push notifications.
Disadvantages:
1) each user have to install the app,
2) it's more code to maintain.
Under the circumstances of beautifull, full functional mobile theme, an APP is needless. imo.

Yes, but even that discussion assumes you have either an app or an android device. ;)
