What do you think about this new image format?
Here is nice comparison: http://xooyoozoo.github.io/yolo-octo-bugfixes/#zoo-bird-head&jpg=s&bpg=s and it looks quite good.
Files can be 2 times smaller with the same quality as JPEG, also it supports alpha channels so it can also be alternative for lossless PNG.
Examples and more info: http://bellard.org/bpg/
Author also released JS decoder (~70KB), so it can be used on every page without worrying if users browser supports this new format.
Thats pretty interesting !
On the small image that new format has considerably less blocking artifacts that are typical with jpeg ...
On medium it was able to keep finer details for the same size image, the geometric details are not lost or blurred in to the adjoining areas which is again very nice visually.
Something to keep a watch on for sure.
How does it compare to WebP?
@ant59 here you can see difference between this two formats: http://xooyoozoo.github.io/yolo-octo-bugfixes/#zoo-bird-head&webp=s&bpg=s
BPG image is 0,6KB larger but image quality is much better
Oh! I didn't see the option. That's quite a difference. This new format certainly looks promising.
Oh, "great".
There already was a "better JPEG". It was called JPEG2000 and no one actually used it.
There already is PNG as a successor to GIF.
No one needs BPG. Go away.
That's a bit rude? Just because something has been done, doesn't mean it has been done as good as it can be.
Of course it is.
