I think OP means, what shows up there?
What do people edit in their profiles to have something show up there?

Custom fields are showed in that area.

May be an idea to not have section show, if there's nothing to show in it.

Will there be "Custom fields" in the new version?

That is not editable? "Extra Details"

Custom fields are already in elkarte (like in smf 2.0). You should first enable custom fields in Admin - core features. Then you can create custom fields, Admin - > Configuration - > security settings - > Custom fields.
