IchBin asked for an announcement and here it is! :P
Yesterday (25/11/2013), 1 year and 3 days after the first commit,
Spuds (http://www.elkarte.net/index.php?topic=759.msg5431#msg5431) prepared and released the first (and hopefully last O:-)) beta version of ElkArte 1.0!
1 year of hard work to bring SMF's codebase into a new cleaner, nicer, easier to work with, etc., etc. shape.
Now it's your (anyone that can't or doesn't want to play with code, to try it, test it, give suggestions, opinions, report bugs, and "the usual things".
There is only an install package, the "upgrade" (from SMF to Elk) is a destructive process, so it's better to deal with it separately (also there are still a couple of problems for example with forums that are not yet using the UTF8 encoding).
Sooo...the download is here:
https://github.com/elkarte/Elkarte/releases/tag/v1.0.0-beta.1
if you want to give a try to convert from SMF you can use TE's OpenImporter (https://github.com/eurich/openimporter), just remember this is still a development version, so the use in "production" is not encouraged (unless you know very well what you are doing and that things can be broken).
There is also a list of known issues (http://www.elkarte.net/index.php?topic=728.0), it will be updated while issues are found (if relevant to mentions I'd say).
/me now takes a break...
Good work Team :D
Haha.. I found the release tag accidentally this morning :D
Congratulations!
Congratulations for being first to reach this milestone! Ahead of Protendo, SMF 2.1 (which probably still has a long way to go), and my very own Wedge. I'm still hoping for a first public alpha (or beta) before 2014, but at least now I don't feel like I have to be the first to be out. Although one can say 3 years and 4 months is a lot to wait (especially for me, as it's a fulltime endeavour), and most people probably think of Wedge as vaporware these days. ;)
Maybe I should fork Elk into Wedge instead... okay, j/k :P
Good one. I think SMF has just become redundant. :)
/me is inclined to think that perhaps only one beta is being rather optimistic ;)
/me is optimistic by nature (LOL)
And most important:
/me doesn't write bugs
Do you think that if I repeated it enough time it will become true? :P
Congratulations on the first milestone! :) Well done indeed.
Thanks! :D
woohoo!! Although by announcement I meant an email to those who have signed up here. But this is good too! :D
Congratulations with the release! It looks awesome. :D
Hey Dr. nice to see you around! ;D
Thanks, it's good to be here. :)
Awesome, something I can gently caress with and totally destroy! :P
Good job, guys.
Hey!
I'm he only one allowed to break things here around! :P
BTW it's almost a week and apart from the "couple" of bugs that were not fixed it looks nice!
Let's clean it up that theme and start working on 1.1!! O:-)
/me is in break-things mood, not in fix-bugs one... :P
Heh, I missed this topic it seems.. (blame it on too much work in RL past 2 weeks :P ) ..but congrats on the beta release! :)
I think we all found few more bugs than expected in this first beta, what do you think about putting together a beta 1,1 with the fixes of this last week (and the few things I'm going to revert in the next few hours)?
Considering nobody should have already made too many customization to their code, we could also release a package with the files that changed to overwrite the existing ones.
Thoughts?
I already used Elk beta and don't mind the update :) Just replace them right?
Yes, to be up-to-date for the moment replace the files is enough. :)
I hope there will not be database changes between beta and final, even though I'm tempted to do at least one small "tweak"...
ETA: I was more thinking that the package as it is is "broken", so it's not really nice to have it as the only beta...
Sooo... what do you think about a beta 2 sometime before the holidays? O:-)
I'd say enjoy your Holiday time off if you do. :)
I hope there will be a documentation what is changed between beta 1 and beta 2 to ensure smooth update :)
December the 23rd is 3 days away, if we miss that we can skip to something between the 28th and the 30th (unless we wait for the new year, that could be a solution too), at the moment there is pending the issue with news reported by NetFlag and a huge bunch of DocBlock fixes from Spuds, everything else (apart from the upgrade... I know, I didn't do my homework :-[) should be pretty much fine... unless broken of course. :P
good news
I set a beta 2 milestone: https://github.com/elkarte/Elkarte/issues?milestone=6&state=open
And a tentative date at January the 6th.
Unless something is very broken should be possible I think.
Good work team, time to test on live server!
There is no "team". ;)
Anyone is welcome to do anything, the way he wants.
This is the idea behind ElkArte: people should be free to collaborate to build the software and its community. Do you want to do code? Do it. Do you want to do some marketing? Do what you thinks is good for the software. Do you want to give support? Do it.
There is no badges here around, just some admins (obviously) and some moderators to be able to move topics around. Is anyone interested in moving bug reports or feature discussions (<= discussions, not requests ;)) to the related "exterminated" board? Give a nudge and it can be set up!
My "offer"
here (http://www.elkarte.net/index.php?topic=806.0) was not random, do you want to take care of the G+ page? Let me know your account and I'll add you as manager. The fact I opened it is just because I saw it as a nice thing and decided to open it.
The fact I'm setting a tentative deadline is just me wanting to try it, not the "reasoning" of a "team", I just wake up and decided: okay, let's put a date on the table. If others agree good, otherwise it can be changed.
P.S.
Sorry for the "OT" and the longish post. :P
@emanuele followed and +1 the google plus page. didn't know it already existed. :D
While we are at it no Facebook Page too?
I recently joined the translation of ElkArte in Transifex and (very) slowly translate it to Indonesia. ;)
I can help moving around the topics :)
Looking good so far 8)
Thanks ... we are getting close to Beta2 as well !
I think I can safely say we actually fixed more bugs in that version than we created :D (no emanuele, that not a challenge for you :P)
Okay, I postponed a bit the tentative release date for beta 2 to the 19th, it was already past by three days and we had some big changes (the new variant :P) and still a couple of bugs open.
Any update on this ? I would like to give it a try. :)
We continue to be painfully close to getting B2 out, I thought it might make it today but we had some testing left to do, plus plus I made a bit of a boo boo :D in using a php 5.3 function when we are supporting back to 5.1 for the initial release.
I'd expect and "official" B2 in the next few days but what is in github right now is it AFAIK as of right now. There is a bit of a discussion on whats different in B2 from B1 here http://www.elkarte.net/community/index.php?topic=844 although we fixed and updated more than that list show, or it sure feels like it !
change on php 5.4
all normal hosting that I have seen, there is support for changing php version
Thanks
@Spuds . I downloaded the Github zip file yesterday. Thought of installing it in WAMP. But since official beta 2 is coming soon, will wait for it.
Even though I discovered yesterday on one host I'm able to go up to php 5.5, on another one I'm using I'm currently stick to 5.3 and I cannot change it. It's an Italian rather cheap host, though I can imagine there are "few" around in that same conditions. 5.3 could be a possible version in the "close future", but 5.4 looks like a "in a couple of years" thing to me (personal opinion).
Unless of unexpected events of very big magnitude, the idea is not to change anything in the database structure once released the first beta, and so any "upgrade" from any beta and the final version should just be a replacement of the files.
That is really good. I would give the downloaded zip file a try. Thanks for explaining :)
