Certainly having a better "zoom" is needed for the thumbnails, just not sure how many bells and whistles should be core.

Because there was a time when talking through images were not easy due to slow internet speed. But now a days, even developing countries have speeds good enough to allow uploading and viewing images with ease. That is certainly a change in scenario for web apps and what they should be offering to end user.
