Colors
While preparing to do a few things with 1.1 (now that 1.0.5 is close to done) I wrote a small program to read all the hex values from a css file, count the usage, and then try and sort them visually using HSL values. There are some RGB values in there as well, I should work on extracting them ... there are also some named values in there as well (actually a quick look show they exists as the name in some places and the hex in others)
Anyway here is the result form the light css alone, 100 hex colors were found, many used just once and many to my eye seem very close to one another. Now since I'm a bit more of a left brain, seems we can really consolidate some of these colors and reduce the palette quite a bit. That in turn should make "colorizing" other themes a bit easier than it is today.

LOL!
Great job!
And yes, I think it makes sense to cut down the number of color used. nods

After I converted a couple of the common names to hex and the rgb (not rgba) to hex, it was 104 colors. I've cut that down to 60.
One could probably do more but at 60 it will be difficult to see what changed. There were a lot of used in 1 place colors that were close to other ones in use so they simply were "combined". Others were just a shade off but were a 1px wide border on a hover button or something like that. Have not looked at besocial just yet but will go through the same routine.

It'd be interesting to see if it actually looks different with the reduced palette.

Yeah it might be borderline for some people. Personal preference. I'd be fine with it being bumped to #585858. That's still pleasant enough to read. #585858 is sufficient to get you to the W3C 500 colour difference recommendation. I'd be a bit wary of going darker than that on the text, unless you're going to provide a lower contrast stylesheet for some people (Which is easy enough to do. I might whip one up sometime).
What's the pixel pitch like on your laptop? Is the text noticeably smaller than desktop?
