Title: ElkArte 1.0 Final - Release announcement
Post by: Spuds on September 07, 2014, 10:12:02 pm
Almost 2 years has passed since work began on ElkArte, a first class FOSS forum program built with many exciting features. Countless hours of work and support have been applied to the project, together with extremely valuable input and feedback from our helpful and constructive community, have resulted in a product of which we are extremely proud.

Today, twenty two months after we began, we are ready to declare ElkArte 1.0.0 (codename: Wombat) stable and ready for deployment to production websites.

We extend our sincere thanks to all those who have dedicated their time, effort and money to help ElkArte reach this day. That means all those who have answered questions, written add-ons, translated text, designed themes, modified templates, reported bugs, submitted patches or written tutorials. Thank you all.

We have much more we still want to accomplish and some code for ElkArte 1.1 has already been written. We are eager to continue its development. This is an exciting time for ElkArte, and we are glad to have you with us.

The following is a list of some of the features you will find in ElkArte:

YAY!

I was wondering if anyone is interested in a "big patch" to upgrade from RC to final.
It would be a quite big one, I don't even know if it would install, but if someone wants to try, I can try to generate it. ;)

How can we upgrade then? Install the final and import a database backup?

/me feels some documentation is needed.

Hahaha just in time when I already fixed my forum. :D Congratulation!

Edit: I'm dumb to unzip directly the files, it replaced my Settings.php. Ahaha.

Two questions:

Whats FOSS

and what is the point of code naming a software? I've seen so and you guys do this,  but I never understood the point. Is it for license purposes or something? :P

FOSS is: Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)  This is computer software that can be classified as both free software and open source software. That is, anyone is freely licensed to use, copy, study, and change the software in any way, and the source code is openly shared so that people are encouraged to voluntarily improve the design of the software. This is in contrast to proprietary software, where the software is under some restrictions such as copyright,  source code, or part there of,  being hidden from the users, development is hidden from the users, bug fixes until released are hidden from the users, etc ... http://freeopensourcesoftware.org  So basically what you see on github is all that we have.

Quoteand what is the point of code naming a software
It serves no real purpose, its was just having some fun, besides there are wombats in the code.  We actually never use the codename in discussions :P

Finally,  the world makes sense now.  :)
