I saw someone else moan about the moose in the elk logo. lol So I figured I'd doodle a little and get an elky looking thing in there anyway. I have two versions I'm working on. Here's the first. Will post the second if I can get it to look ok with the idea I'm working on.
That's more like it. :)
/me goes to find something else to moan about.
lol wasn't just you. It bothered me and quite a few other people from what I recall. Looks like my other idea isn't working so well. Was going to put the elkarte word between the horns. I just can't get the layout to work where the words are actually readable.
I like the one you did make. It's perdy. :P
LOL. Seems to be a translation issue ;) That animal you call a "moose" is named "
Elch" in german.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Elgportraet_han_(Alces_alces).jpg
To us Europeans, moose and elk are much the same creature but to Americans, moose and elk are different creatures.
Nice, lol, thank you BinMan! :) So Elky now haz real horns!
...And there I was, thinking that we can get away with Norwegian Elkhound: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Elkhound
Hah!
Indeed our current logo was a first elky draft. Which of them Elks? That's a question, and you're welcome to make it per your vision on it. Lets improve this or other ideas, and adapt it to the color variations of the default theme.
We have set our collaborative development process on github. Go ahead. ;)
ETA: the American use of "Elk" is more Elky if you ask me, than the moose. IMHO.
There's a definite difference here in America, and in particular in the states like mine that are known for hunting. Elk != Moose for sure. :)
Just put it up to see what everyone thought. I have a friend that is a graphics artist for his day job. He is really awesome at this stuff. I've been trying to convince him to come up with a logo for us. :) In the mean time, if I come up with anything else I'll post it and maybe commit it. :)
cool, would be nice if we could get an SVG version, too :)
/me want's an Elk shirt :D
Why don't you just change the project name to MooseArt? No need for a new logo then.:D
An Elk is not a moose...
Since everyone was whipping up logos, I thought I'd whip one up. It is a vector done in illustrator, so it can be resized to any size without losing resolution, and can be saved as SVG if you want. Please ignore colors, it can easily be changed, I just wanted to see if the powers that be like the overall design. It is a unique design if you wanted to keep it for trademark purposes...
I did this one last night, just for fun.
Nice logo there, although I don't think it fits for a professional forum software.
Well I was bored with the blue moose. :P
Xarcell,
Thank you for the work on it! That's a surprising Elk, very elegant, and abstract.
Just to note, the spelling we use is ElkArte.
LOL @ Ant.
Thank yer! So, say, Elk looks fat in your view, huh? I understand Feature Cat, but Elk is much leaner and cleaner than that cat-thing. It ain't like that.
/me likes it O:-)
I like it too. :) No, seriously, this is a good direction, rather than a passive symbol. You are already doing the wordgame of ElkArte, so why not? A bit more elegance on the font and its killer IMO.
I'm totally open to font ideas for it, but I agree on the good direction. It'll make people happy. This is not a bad thing.
Mmm... I'd rather see Xar's logo a little less abstract, to suggest more of an Elk O:-)
Another attempt...
Thats certainly not an elk lol. Elegant symbol no doubt..but still think humour is a better way.
What do we know about the elk animal? long face/head, a bit more fisty than moose and king of the forest of course. There's a few pointers there I think.
Ah, my apologies. It seems I am thinking of the european version of "elk" which looks like moose almost, while you US citizens think of the deerlike creature. In that case its more a correct image.
Though i liked the "moose" better :) it seems its not. oh well.
It doesn't matter to me, but it was discussed in another topic that the american "elk" is what we are using. If I am mistaken, someone please correct me. I know Nao said that he thought "Elkarte" represented an "Elk tree" & "Art". I always read it as "El Karte", which I thought was some other language...
try it in translate.google.com ;)
I got "baskian" language when auto-detecting the "elkarte" word. Which means "associations" in english..lol, now I am really confused.
I guess its something with Spain then(..).
EDIT: and btw, when I write "elk" in it, it translates to norwegian "elg" - which is the moose. :D
Elkarte is Basque for "community". It's obviously European, although not Indo-European. However, it has absolutely nothing to do with either elks or mooses, however you care to define such critters.
It started being called Elk just for fun and because it was shorter. This then led to pictures of critters with antlers and stuff. Me, I'm happy with the green moose, and I don't mind if that annoys the Yanks. Having a moose will probably annoy some Basques too, since they'll be wondering what these silly mugs are doing wth their word, which has nothing to do with either elks or mooses, or any other ruminants of the antlered variety. You can't please everyone all the time.
Anyway, the funny green moose is fun. The funny penguin works for Linux, and they have managed to create a good professional reputation for their software. They could do this because the software was good enough for the job.
The green moose is not unique, that logo is all over the net and represents various things: https://www.google.com/search?q=cartoon+moose&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Ak-6UaO1Aoa89QSHv4HQAg&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=1300&bih=707#tbm=isch&sa=1&q=cartoon+elk&oq=cartoon+elk&gs_l=img.3..0l3.22138.22707.0.22996.3.3.0.0.0.0.79.189.3.3.0...0.0.0..1c.1.17.img.W4TMROXL_s4&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47883778,d.eWU&fp=ad8e659e484fc4c2&biw=1300&bih=707
Yeah I know, but it's fun. AFAIK it's not being used by any particular project, and it's an open source image, and nobody else has a green one.
Anyway, the main point was that there's no need to get hung up over one person's definition of what an elk is.
I don't think Xarcell's image looks like an Elk. It looks more like a dear. Especially with the rounded type horn. I personally am more in favor of the animated one too. I don't think it's completely necessary to use an Elk though either. Something that will signify us down the road. I don't think we have to be all business about it when choosing either.
It's used by a popular blog.
Doesn't matter much to me. I may try to draw a cartoon(comical) ELK in illustrator...
That would be cool. :)
(https://i.chzbgr.com/maxW500/6655746560/h3CE5ABA1/)
Bet theirs isn't green.
Ok, I got curious about this. I was wondering if the "elk" part of the word had any specific meaning on its own in Basque. So far, I've managed to find a bit on Basque etymology. I haven't found "elk" as a standalone prefix or word, but there is some related stuff which gives clues.
L LN in this context stands for Late Low Navarran. The term "each other" seems to be related to the modern
elkarte ("community"), funnily enough.
There's also this, from the same source:
I can see
elkarrekin ("together") being obviously related to
elkarte ("community").
So there ya go. Nothing to do with elks or mooses, unless you happen to be discussing a community of elks or mooses, in which case it may be relevant. :)
PS: I have also promised Norv that I wont start using Basque class names and id's in the markup. ;)
The image for the cartoon moose is public domain. Have at it all you want.
lol @ lost in translation!
We don't "know" what an Elk is, that's up to your vision of an Elk to show us. Brad's version is a concrete groovy American Elk, Xar's is so far a more abstract and elegant American Elk (or red deer?), and Ant's a big fat moose.
Here's what I propose: lets take the logo's that stay, and submit them to a community vote.
I can see where the confusion stems.
European languages (sans english) such as German and French, only have one word that refers to our antlered friend, which is "Elche" or "Elch", translating to either "Deer", "Elk", or "Moose". The reasoning is probably because in other countries, those animals are less in volume and are rarely even seen, and end up being all referred to as one word.
To be honest, Moose are by far the most superior in the family.
I need some time to draw another draft.
Here is a tease of what I did in illustrator, not sure if I'm gonna stick with it though. Just wondered what your thoughts are before I spend anymore time on it. I know the left antler and jaw need some re-work...
I personally don't think it would make a good logo..
:D It's cool, but I agree it's a bit much for a logo. Would be great on a t shirt for fun, but too complex for a logo that has to work at small sizes, and a bit too manic for general use. He looks like a real party animal.
I didn't want to bother coloring it in if no one liked it.
I like it, Xarcell .. Well done :)
It's great for merchandising products (shirts, cups, underpants :D )
Well, not quite. :) In Norway for example we have the words for deer, elk and moose - as in "hjort", "kronhjort" and "elg". The "elk" is a deer with larger horns as it is, thats what "kron - hjort" means. And - all other nordic languages have the names for each of the 3 too.
Truth told, while i know all the names, I had to look it up. :) Its was when i used translations things got confusing. :P
So this is it:
(http://cdn1.cdnme.se/cdn/4/1818590/images/2011/kronhjort_170228172.jpg)
:D
Nice one. :)
Very cool. :D No reason why we couldn't have two logos either. One official, small scale one, and a t-shirt and underpants one for fun.
Also like Bloc's pic. Better than a moose. I say we make it the offical beast. :D
It was just googled..but a good starting point perhaps, if you want to make a logo out of it. I think the majestic nature of it is important. its not just a deer - its the deer of all deers! :D
But no reason why it can't be fun as well.
Yeah give it a Rasta beanie and shades.
(I wasn't really thinking of making a logo out of it. More for wall posters at conventions)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk
Makes sense? :P
That's interesting. I always thought it really was Elk+Arte, not a single word instead...
And, from a language that's spoken in my country... ;)
PS-- best song to ever come out of this Spanish-French region:
http://media.noisen.com/item/1011/
Would listen to it, but can't get it to play. :)
oohh, can we please haz a more serious logo? That current one is *ahem*.. It's funny but IMHO makes ElkArte looking ridiculous..
If linux can haz funny penguin, why can't we haz funny moose elk kronhjort? :D
I'm not worried. If someone makes a good one, it'll get used. This is alpha.
Not the best one, but more serious.. based on Xarcell's Elk..
Dumb grreen moose is fatter than I :P
Iz no penguin.
Needz cool logo contest!
Ohhh! I ain't seen that! Wow. It's really clean and cool and sayz 'prroud to be Elk-powerred'. :D
Now icons arre a lil' behind them times, but could try that nonetheless.
It's a Flash player... So, until Noisen starts using Wedge and until I get Wedge to use MediaElements instead of that Flash crap, it won't work on mobile I'm afraid...
Still, you can download the track, I believe there's a link below, and then listen to it on your device ;)
It's really a nice freak-folk song, especially towards the end.
TE: I like that one. Although for a logo I'd lose the "powered by".
Nao, I'm on desktop and have Flash, so not sure why it wouldn't play.
I added that "powered by" , because it's an advertising logo. It's only visible for those websites who don't use the "site slogan" feature.. (like this one)
Can remove it, nonetheless..
Edit: attached..
Just loaded up the first one on local. Gotta say, it looks pretty classy. :)
First one is a better size IMO.
ETA: I'll see if I can come up with some good on/on2/off icons, unless someone else beats me to it.
Header looks better with that logo if paddings and site name font size are tweaked a bit.
/* The logo and slogan. */
#header {
padding: 2px 2px 10px 2px;
background: #fbfbfb;
border-bottom: 1px solid #777;
box-shadow: 0 2px 3px rgba(0,0,0,0.4);
}
/* The main title. */
.forumtitle {
font-size: 2.3em;
padding: 28px 12px 0 12px;
float: left;
}
quick addition for the on.png, off.png and on2.png
Not that nice, but they should better harmonize with the new logo..
I think we'll need something non-Elky for those. My 2c.
not sure if these ones are better, they are mostly based on the old on.png, on2.png and off.png
file extension is svg, this site doesn't allow svg as attachments. Colors can be changed inline, just replace the style="fill:#46823c" / style="stroke:none;fill:#46823c" with your favorite color.
BoardIndex.template.php would need to be changed slighly..
Mmmmmmmmmmm, not really grabbing me. We'll think of something. :)
Does anyone have an svg version (or at least a scalable one) of the logo?
I was thinking to add it to the github repo, but it requires a bigger one and just stretch a png it becomes... meh... :D
Not sure yet, and I can't check before tomorrow (It was made on a different computer).
here we are :D
I was bored...
P.S.: I know it needs a capital A...
Nice one Jorin!
Dunno, let's say the elk is the "easy" way to find a logo, if you have other ideas feel free to drop them ;)
I like the elk. :)
Here's one especially for
@emanuele ;D And yes: The elk is completely my own work so no copyrights are violated.
LOL
Like it! :D
Here is mine, it seems like I made a copy of some other logo.
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/745/CPB7Gc.png)
Wish I am as good as you guys at graphics.
Nice your too Mstcool. :D
I wonder how it would look
@Jorin with the head of the elk overlapped to the "elk" or the "arte"... probably not so well, right?
Thanks guys :)
I wish I would be as good in programming as most of you. Then we would have a gallery so far. :P ;)
:D
ROFL ... Now that is funny, I want one too !
Hehe....
@Spuds :D
(http://www.elkarte.net/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=395.0;attach=1861;image)
Hm, I don't think so too. I will try something...
Next ones...
Good work
@Jorin :)
I really like image elklogo5r.png but I think that it would be better with font used here: http://www.elkarte.net/community/index.php?topic=395.msg14163#msg14163 (btw. what is name of this font? ::) )
Indeed, very nice.! I do find myself liking the 5R the best as well.
5r remains my favourite as well.
Nice! :D
I guess it would also scale (down) nicely, for example for the favicon removing the text and leave only the antlers.
I was thinking the same thing, about the favicon with just the antler may work well.
What would be the best way to use this in the header, as is or reversed background or ???
As is if you ask me..
I think we have established that both you and I are graphically challenged :P
Lool
Just in case I'm not the only one, when I look at the antler in 5r if I didn't know it was supposed to be an elk antler I would have thought it was a cartoon outline of a weasel or something like that. The top two points are the ears. Next is the snout. Then two legs and the trunk of the antler is the tail. Maybe I just spent too much time looking for shapes in clouds as a kid though.
Hummm ... Now I'm seeing a female kangaroo, I'll let y'all figure out the parts :P
I can optimize it, make a dark variation and a favicon if you wish. O:-)
What do you think about these?
If you want to use it you surely can, just tell me what you need (png or gif, transparent or not, sizes, with or without slogan, black & white or colored, etc).
I like these :)
Just a thought. Maybe we could explore the Art part of the word vs the Elk part? What do you more artistic folks think of exploring that?
Nice idea. :)
But someone has to make a decision otherwise there never will be the ElkArte logo and we will keep the momentary forever. ;)
We can, by the way, if anyone likes it. I don't want to force a new logo.
I'd say that since this come up often enough that a change may be in order.
I think with your latest "antler" designs we have pretty much explored what can be done there ( between this thread and this one http://www.elkarte.net/community/index.php?topic=995.msg10510#msg10510 ) Maybe give the Art vector a try and see what ideas come out of that. Or any other ideas folks may have.
At that point we can choose between current, best new elk, best new art and be happy :D
Maybe we can combine the art und the elk in the same logo... Hm...
Here is a simple one I made as well
(http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/mstcool1/elkarte1_zpscef5dd7c.png)
It has a black outline around the words, which you can't really see cuz this is white LOL
I made an update to the ElkArte G+ site. So, what about colors and logos now? Which can I use?
I think its time to bug
@emanuele who has been selectively skipping this thread :P to get his thoughts on any direction.
Choosing logos and names is difficult since no one is wrong, people like what they like.
I suppose a few of us could go off and simply choose and just say this is it .... frankly that is what may be required here. I don't know if the community at large can make this decision, but simply help with choices (which they certainly have).
^^ This! O:-)
Last time I had to pick a logo I just created a random rotator and put all of them together. LOL
I completely trust your choice. ;D
The one made by
@Spuds fits the definition of the logo to the closest degree,
