I think it's probably useful for guests, but mostly useless for logged-in members.

I always use it, because it allows me to keep up to date with new posts without having to give up on the 'unread' flag for topics, allowing me to switch between my smartphone (recent posts) and desktop (topic view) easily.

Fair enough. I've never used it that way. The only use I've ever had for it is as a short list of recent posts in a portal sidebar. That's handy for keeping up with an active forum if you're involved in several threads. In fact it's one of the best arguments for a sidebar, IMO. The only possible improvement would be to change it to show unread rather than recent, including hiding posts by anyone on your ignore list (pretty bad for performance, but the punters would love it).
