Variant help

In my theme Clean, I'm pretty sure selecting different variants used to work, but now it doesn't and I don't really understand why. What's the proper procedure for adding theme variants?

PS - This is the current release of my theme, it may not be reflected on the Themes site yet. https://github.com/talia-storymaker/clean/releases/tag/v1.1.1

I haven't tried recently, but variant did work when I build my addon for it about a year ago. Not sure whether I did share that addon in here though.

Anyway, could it be that you have missed something?

What does "doesn't work" mean in this context? :)
