ElkArte 1.1.9 - Release Announcement

Today, we are pleased to release ElkArte 1.1.9. This is the 10th release in the 1.1 line.

This release addresses any remaining compatibility issues with PHP 8.1.  In addition to full PHP 8.x support, bugs were identified and fixed, enhancements to existing functionality was added and a several new features were included.  Overall this is a large update intended to bridge the gap between the 1.1 and upcoming 2.0 line.

Of course you are encouraged to update to this release since it contains a lot of fixes and improvements, thank you for your continued support!

New Features and Enhancements
  • Quick Quote allows you to select text in a post and quote just that selection when making a reply.
  • Quote Show More is a quote display limiting function.  Should someone quote a long post, only a portion is shown unless the users selects the "show more" text that is overlayed on the quote.  This length is configurable in the admin panel.
  • Webp support for attachments and avatars.
  • Open graph meta data and schema.org micro data, to help with SEO, is generated and inserted in the page output.
  • Nested Quote Depth level vs previous behavior of yes/no.
  • Save avatars as and thumbs as PNG option has been removed.  The system will now detect if the image has transparency and save as appropriate (Webp or if not enabled then PNG or JPG)

Refer to the release notes on the forum for a complete list of updates. Release Notes

:high_brightness:If you were running any beta 1.1.9 patches you should uninstall those and install this final package.

Patching procedure:
  • Go to the page https://github.com/elkarte/Elkarte/releases/tag/v1.1.9
  • Download the file ElkArte_v1-1-9_patch.zip to your computer
  • Go to your forum: Admin > Main > Package Manager > Upload Package
  • Click the button to upload the package
  • Locate and select the file you downloaded at point 2
  • Click the "upload" button
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.

Upgrading procedure:
  • If you are running a previous 1.1 version then you have two options
    • Install each of the patch files in sequence until you get patched to 1.1.9
    • Or you can use the full install package and overwrite your existing files,  then run the updater yourforum/install/update.php (which should come up automatically).  If you choose to use the full package it is strongly advised to uninstall any addons, do your upgrade, then reinstall the most recent version of the addons.

:high_brightness:Be sure to check for updates to any addons you are running, many have been updated to support new 1.1.9 features.

For any question you may have, feel free to ask on the support forum.

When is 1.1.10 due as it's been two years now.

It will never be due as this software development is a work of members who are contributing it in their own free times at their own free wills.

Users are free to fork it from github and develop their own, but may also be best to join in and contribute to its development as well. The more the better and the merrier.

I am just one of a member who did very very small contributions, so hopefully,  I could only help in this forum posting and moderating and may be a little bit of coding help.

And may be linked this forum somewhere else too.

All that're said, @Spuds can you look into releasing 1.1.10 that you already shared before as an official ElkArte release?

I was looking for a convenient post to "jump in on" and ask a basic question, but you've got queries all over the board with various add-ons and plug-ins, so I'll pick this one..

What was the last known "bug free" forum  and server configuration you had (if you know) and can you "roll back" to that configuration?

At this point, I would not be surprised if it's necessary to wipe everything, do a fresh install, test the heck out of it with actual users (who will do things in ways you would never think of to try), and then back that up when you know it's stable, and then slowly add a mod or add-on one at a time and make sure that works before adding something else. That way if/when something breaks, you have a known-good baseline to go back to. As it stands now, we have no idea what mods, add-ons, patches, you have installed, what you have installed and removed (most of?), never mind what your server configuration, database, etc. is.
It's quite possible what you have now is the first iteration of that combination of software anywhere on the planet..

And a known good baseline is especially important if you download and install a mod or add-on that was last tested with, say, EH 1.0.9 running php 5.2  more than 12 years ago, and has few support comments and none in the last 9 years. Heck, there may be some out there someone tried to port to EH that never worked right.
Consequently, there is no way to know if the error you encounter is related to the forum software, the server configuration, or the last 7 mods you installed, 4 of which you tried to uninstall because it didn't work, or you didn't like...

Again, do you have a known-good forum configuration you can restore to?
